Hey, my Squids!
Jumping back on here with some work in progress for page 22 of Chapter 3. This is… the second to last page where Leira and Saul are together. This is such a bittersweet scene. We get to see how much Saul loves Leira, how what her family has done to her bothers him, and how he recognizes when he oversteps and wants to correct what he’s done. In her life, he was one of the first to give her grace when she lashed out but also course correct when he’s out of line. She wasn’t used to that. And what’s that she almost says at the end…? She started to.
These last two pages will be the hardest to draw until I have to draw the revelation that he’s dead. I don’t want this to end. I wish I could have just made a story about them. But I drew a story about trauma, loss, regret, anger, acceptance, and persistence. Maybe next time… maybe.
